Information On Trad Climbing
And Trad Climbing Gear
In trad climbing the climbing company climbs at its own
risk placing all the safety points on the rock. The leader carries
on his belt a series of nuts, cams and sewn runners and as he climbs
he looks for the right places or crevices to put them. As the second
ascends he removes and collects the various safety devices and the
rock remains clean.
Traditional climbing difficulties
Traditional climbing has various kinds of difficulties
and adversities. You may need to climb under rain, lose the right
line of the route and face a deadend, be slow and not finish the
route before the sun goes down. However, because of all that
situations traditional climbing is different than other types of
rock climbing.
The placing of the safety devices is the most
important task of the leader. To be efficient you must estimate the
capability of placing safety devices fast and precisely. Choose the
most simple solution.
In trad climbing you should not risk falling. The
leader must be able to descend difficult passages if it is
necessary.
Traditional climbing routes
Traditional climbing routes usually are long and
placed at middle or high altitude. While on the route you will carry
some supplies so you will climbing with a pack on your back. Often
you will need to climb wearing relatively heavy clothes or
raincoats. Usually you will carry your supplies using two packs. A
small for the leader and a bigger for the second.
More than in other type of rock climbing, in trad
climbing "speed means safety" but the speed must be a result of
experience and skill.
