Rock Climbing RopesChoosing the right rock
climbing ropes
Ropes are manufactured in a big
variety of length and diameter each one for different use. That
doesn't mean that it is dangerous to use the same rope for sport
climbing and traditional climbing. As long as you are not going to
use the rope for high mountain expeditions or caving any rope from a
well known manufacturer is a good choice. Its length can be from
45-100 m and its diameter 9-11 mm. Usually for rock climbing you
need a rope about 60 m long. The important thing is to take care of
your rope and always maintain it in good condition.

Care of rock climbing ropes before and while
climbing
Do not spread your rope on the ground. Protect it by
using the special rope carrying bag. Shake your rope regularly to
prevent dirt, dust and sand from getting into its kernel. Try not to
wetten the rope. A wet rope is unpleasant when you touch it and
heavy to carry it. If the weather is cold it may freeze and it is
difficult for you to handle it.
Care of rock climbing ropes after climbing
After every use you must check the rope with your hand
inch by inch. Put the rope in one hand and pull it with the other.
You are looking for flat or loose spots. If you feel a damage which
is not visible do the following test. Form a semicyrcle with that
part of the rope and place your thumb on one side, your index finger
on the other side and push. If a circle is formed the rope can be
used again. If the two sides touch one each other don't use the rope
again for climbing.
It is good to clean your rope with warm water and let
it dry away from sun or high temperatures. Also protect it from
gasoline, acids and chemicals. If you are going to store it for a
long time it is good to know that even when the conditions are
perfect the rope loses 2-3% of its properties every year.
Lifespan of rock climbing ropes
The timeframe in which the rock climbing ropes can be
used with safety is called lifespan of the ropes. The determenation
of this timeframe is difficult because there are so many variables
to consider. The following is an empirical rule which gives the
lifespan of the rope:
occasional use - vacations : 2-4 years
regular
use - weekends and vacations : 2 years
intensive use - almost
daily : 3 months - 1 year
*These timeframes are indicative.
Everytime follow the procedure you read above.
Generally the rock climbing ropes are a very personal
piece of equipment, much more that the harness or the helmet.
