Rock Climbing NutsGeneral information about
nuts
Nuts are metal wedges that we place in the rock's
cracks for protection. They provide very good safety and give us the
ability to use them in crevices of various sizes(3mm - 20 cm). The
nuts are considered to be "clean", ecological, safeties because they
can be used many times without being damaged or damage the rock.
They come in a very big variety of sizes. The main types of nuts are
stoppers, hexes and cams.
Stoppers
Stoppers are the most simple nuts.
They have four effective facets and two from which the metal wire
goes through. The latest types of stoppers have their facets curved.
Most climbers prefer the curved than the flat stoppers. The curved
stoppers give more safety because they adjoin a bigger surface of
the rock. They fit in crevices from a size of a nail to that of a
finger and are sold in numbered series of 10 pieces(No1-No10).
Hexes or hexcentrics
Hexes are bigger nuts and their
assymetrical facets are very practical for bigger, angular crevices.
The hexes with a piece of rope or kevlar are more handy than the
ones with a metal wire. They provide very durable safety points and
are possibly the cheaper stoppers. Hexes are manufactured in various
sizes and are numbered from No1 to No10.
Camming devices or cams
Cams(spring loaded camming
devices-SLCD) are eccentric devices with adjustable size which have
3 or 4 "teeth". They also come in various types and sizes from No1
to No5 with half sizes too. Cams need attention and experience to be
placed safely in the rock. They are very useful means of safety but
much more expensive than other nuts.
