AscendersJumar
Jumar is a simple device which is
used instead of the selftightening knot(prusik) to ascend a fixed
single rope. It moves when you push or pull it upwards and it blocks
if you stop or try to pull it downwards. It is made of a light
aluminium alloy. There are jumars with a handhold or without one
which are for the waist. Jumar is much more handy than
selftightening knots and very fast for rescues. Its only
disadvantages are that it lightly damages the seath of the rope and
is a bit expensive.
Petzl Tibloc
There are also some types of
mini jumars of which the most impressive is the Tibloc of Petzl. It
is a very light(39gr) and "smart" device. Because of its small
weight you can have it always on you since it is very useful for
manoeuvres and rescues.
Petzl Shunt
Shunt is a special device which is
used as a brake of the rope when you rappel. It has a mechanism
which blocks the rope. When you push a lever it lets the rope free
to move upwards or downwards. It can be used on a single or a double
rope. It can also be used as an ascender instead of a jumar. Its
main advantages are that it doesn't damage the seath of ropes like
the jumar does and that it is very handy in case of rescues.
