Carabiners

Use of carabiners

Carabiners(or biners) are special rings with a moving gate which opens to one direction. The gate has a spring and closes automatically. Their main use is the connection of the rope with the safeties we place on the rock.

Basic types of biners

A pair of lightweight non-locking carabiners The two basic types of carabiners are the locking and the non-locking. The locking biners are used when you belay or rapel. They come in two types, screwing and automatic. The screwing biners have a small ring on their gate. After you screw the ring using your hand, the gate is secured and can't open by itself in no circumstances. This the advantage of the locking biners(and the disadvantage that you may forget to screw the ring).

A large pear shaped ball lock carabiner The automatic biners have a ring with a spring which closes by itself. In some cases they may open. There are also biners with a ball lock. To open the gate you must first push with your finger a little small ball. That way there is no possibility that the gate opens by the rope or some other cause. If sometime you don't have a locking carabiner you can use two non-locking ones facing to different directions.
