Belay And Rappel Devices
Use and decription of belay and rappel devices
They are a group of special devices which allow the controlled slide of the rope. They are made of aluminium alloys and are used to rappel, belay our climbing partner and ascend a rope.
Figure 8
The figure 8 is a very handy belay and rappel device. It is made of aluminium and weighs about 80-130gr. It is very easy to use and provides very good control at rappel. The friction generating method is different for single or double rope. For the right belaying of the leader particular familiarity and practice is needed. According to the manufacturers it can hold falls to 20 kN.
Tubers
Tubers are a group of descenders with multilateral usage: rappel, belaying the leader or the follower, top-rope belaying. They are ideal for belaying the leader when using a double rope technique. They also work very good at rappel on double or single rope. According to the manufacturers it can hold falls to 20 kN.
Petzl Reverso
A descender and belay device which can do three things. It is ideal for belaying the leader on single or double rope. It automatically blocks the rope when belaying, if one of the seconds falls. It provides the right friction for rappel on a single or double rope. Whith this device two seconds can be belayed independently.
Petzl Grigri
The Grigri of petzl is a belaying device for both the
leader and the second. It works as a belay device exclusively with a single rope 10-11mm and as a descender with a single rope 9-12mm. It behaves like the seat-belt of a car. When the rope slides slowly it can go through. When the rope suddenly accelerates, it is blocked. The main difference between this device and other belay devices is that the belaying doesn't depend on the belayer's hand since the rope blocks automatically. It can hold falls up to 9 kN.
